Exhibition description

The exhibition “Orbits and Forms. Family Graphic Constellations” brings together two artists – Celina Styrylska and Joanna Lola Styrylska – who, despite belonging to different generations, share a common visual language: rooted in disciplined form, a refined sense of color, and an intuitive, deeply personal approach to nature.

The show creates a space for dialogue, resonating with echoes of modernism, the geometry of the 1960s, as well as contemporary expression and the conscious embrace of chance. Alongside the structured, precisely crafted woodcuts of Celina Styrylska – including her renowned Planets cycle – the exhibition features monotypes by Joanna Lola Styrylska, offering a contemporary interpretation of this legacy.

The younger artist’s works are not a mere repetition of her aunt’s aesthetics, but rather a creative transformation, filtering geometry through her own artistic sensibility and experience. The titular “orbits” refer not only to Celina’s planetary inspirations but also to family trajectories – paths that, while seemingly distant, revolve around shared values: harmony, light, composition, and movement. The “forms” become a language of understanding – graphic signs of both memory and individuality, embedded in structures that connect rather than divide.

The exhibition also explores the notion of inheritance – not only genetic, but above all creative. It is a story of how images transcend time, gaining new contexts while retaining their original power. It is also an attempt to honor the legacy of Celina Styrylska – an artist and educator whose work deserves rediscovery and recognition within the history of Polish printmaking.

“Orbits and Forms” is not just an exhibition – it is a story showing that art can be inherited like memory – through the eye, gesture, color, and rhythm.


Celina Styrylska-Taranczewska (1923–2010)

In 1947, she completed her studies under Professor Eugeniusz Eibisch at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. From 1953 she was affiliated with her alma mater, initially teaching lettering at the Katowice branch. From the 1960s, she ran a course in three-dimensional and planar design, later renamed Knowledge of Visual Structures and Actions, which she independently developed into a new discipline – a subject still taught today under the title Structures of the Artwork.

Her extensive teaching career went hand in hand with her artistic practice in painting, printmaking, and design.

She was a member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP), which awarded her a bronze medal in 1962. Since 1979 she was affiliated with the international association Xylon.

Her work bears the hallmarks of art from the late 1950s and 1960s: decorative geometrization and rhythm, blending abstraction with figuration, and bold use of contrasting colors. Much of her output may be described as “geometric figuration.”

In the 1960s, she began a series of colorful woodcuts titled after planets of the Solar System. These ascetic, subtly decorative compositions echoed op-art. In the early 1960s, she was commissioned to design a monumental mosaic for the façade of the “Biprostal” office building in Krakow. This modernist work still adorns the building today, admired for its scale, precision, and artistic ambition.


Joanna Lola Styrylska (#styrylska_art)

Born in Katowice in 1980, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where in 2006 she graduated with distinction from the Faculty of Graphic Arts (Lithography Studio under Prof. Roman Żygulski). In 2008, she also completed studies at the Faculty of Painting with a specialization in Art Pedagogy.

She is a recipient of scholarships from the Polish Ministry of Culture and Art as well as the Mayor of Krakow. She works in easel painting, illustration, and graphic design. Twice awarded the Grand Prix at the BWA Art Salon in Tarnów (2009, 2011), her works are held in private collections in Poland and abroad.

Living and working in Krakow, she combines classical and digital techniques to create works characterized by strong formal structure and emotional intensity. Her approach is inspired by the Kapist tradition of painting, rooted in the observation of color and its autonomy.

She is particularly fond of collage, which she employs both visually and conceptually. Her works abound with rhythm, contrast, multiplication, and associative layers. Literature – especially the writings of Virginia Woolf, women’s poetry, and Japanese haiku – remains a major source of inspiration. For her, the word – subtle, concise, and suggestive – often becomes a parallel language to the visual.

Her artistic output can be read as visual diaries – records of inner experience, reflections on human relations, and attempts to create new meanings from color, line, and texture. She has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions.

Sybilla Skałuba is a respected visual artist and Sybilla Skałuba is a respected visual artist and Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, where she passionately heads the Relief Printmaking Studio.
Her artistic practice is characterized by the remarkable ease with which she balances diverse media, encompassing printmaking, object, sound, and video art. Skałuba's creative process is deeply intuitive, rather than calculated, often taking the form of arduous and meditative practices. Combining various tools and materials, the artist utilizes a wide spectrum of techniques developed over the years, including both classical and digital methods, consistently advancing her interdisciplinary path as an active participant in numerous national and international exhibitions.
As a lecturer, she is actively involved in didactic and organizational work dedicated to the popularization of science and art. During her career, she participated in collective activities, notably within the BIBU Group, while also owning the accompanying BIBU Gallery of Contemporary Art. She also led intensive international collaborations, which resulted in projects such as Transitonal Urban Matrix (with Academia di Bella Arte in Porto), Project Connect (with Chelsea College of Arts in London), and strong cooperation with the Japanese Ryu Contemporary Art Group and the Hamano Art Foundation, among many others.
Furthermore, she was heavily involved in the realization of the Golden Vision Music and Art project. This initiative aimed to protect cultural heritage through artistic activities in post-industrial sites in Silesia, giving revitalized spaces a new function that referenced the golden age of the region's industrial revolution. These events took place in characteristic locations within the Silesian Voivodeship, such as the former management building of the Uthemann Steelworks, the Rolling Mill of the Non-Ferrous Metals Steelworks in Katowice-Szopienice, the Obywatelski Brewery in Tychy, and the Railway Station in Ruda Śląska Chebzie

w Krakowie, z którym jestem zawodowo związana od 2014 roku. Obecnie pracuję jako adiunkt w Pracowni Miedziorytu. W 2022 roku uzyskałam stopień doktora
w dziedzinie sztuki, w dyscyplinie sztuki plastyczne i konserwacja dzieł sztuki.
W mojej twórczości sięgam przede wszystkim do własnych wspomnień i doświadczeń. Świadomie wybieram najbardziej czasochłonne i wymagające techniki, odkrywając w nich aktualność i siłę. Kluczowy jest dla mnie procesualny, medytacyjny aspekt tworzenia. Brałam udział w ponad 200 wystawach w Polsce i za granicą. Od 2024 roku pełnię funkcję prodziekan Wydziału Grafiki ASP w Krakowie.

I graduated from the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, with which I have been professionally associated since 2014. I am currently working as an assistant professor in the Engraving Studio. In 2022, I was awarded a PhD in art, in the discipline of fine arts and art conservation. In my work, I draw primarily on my own memories and experiences. I deliberately choose the most time-consuming and demanding techniques, discovering their relevance and power. The meditative, process-based aspect of creation is key for me. I have participated in over 200 exhibitions in Poland and abroad. Since 2024, I have held the position of Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków.
Agnieszka Dutka, artystka sztuk wizualnych, grafic Agnieszka Dutka, artystka sztuk wizualnych, graficzka, autorka obiektów artystycznych, autorka publikowanych tekstów literackich. Absolwentka Wydziału Grafiki ASP w Krakowie, kilkanaście lat graficzka i detepowiec w Gazecie Wyborczej o. Kraków. Obecnie pracuje w Instytucie Sztuki i Designu UKEN na stanowisku profesora uczelni.Jest członkinią Rady Szkoły Doktorskiej UKEN.
Działając w obszarze grafiki zwraca się w stronę projektów intermedialnych, jako bardziej adekwatnej formy dla idei z pogranicza dokumentu i sztuki. Jest autorką kilkunastu wystaw indywidualnych oraz uczestniczką ponad 120 wystawach w kraju i za granicą. Laureatka kilku nagród. Jej prace znajdują się w zbiorach muzealnych i kolekcjach instytucji.

Agnieszka Dutka,a visual artist, graphic designer, creator of artistic objects, and an author of published literary texts. A graduate of the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, she spent over a decade as a graphic designer and DTP operator for the Kraków branch of Gazeta Wyborcza. She is currently a university professor at the Institute of Art and Design at UKEN and a member of the UKEN Doctoral School Council.
In her graphic work, she turns toward intermedial projects, finding them a more suitable form for ideas that lie on the border of documentary and art. She is the author of over a dozen solo exhibitions and has participated in more than 120 exhibitions in Poland and abroad. She has been recognized with several awards, and her works are held in museum and institutional collections.

Dziesięć Uczennic z Centrum dla Niewidomych i Słabowidzących w Krakowie wzięło udział w warsztatach prowadzonych przez Martę Bożyk, Katarzynę Wojtygę, Krzysztofa Mikosia i Jakuba Pietrynkę. Pierwszego dnia Uczestniczki poznały graficzne instrumentarium przez pełną ciekawostek narrację oraz dotykowe i węchowe studiowanie drewnianych matryc, sit do serigrafii oraz ręcznie czerpanych papierów. Z pomocą Prowadzących Dziewczyny samodzielnie stworzyły linoryty i druki na T-shirtach. Drugiego dnia, pod okiem perfumiarza Jakuba Pietrynki, Uczestniczki skomponowały zapach grafiki w oparciu o zdobyte wcześniej multisensoryczne doświadczenia. Jesteście ciekawi, jak pachnie grafika? Zapachowy bukiet stworzyły nuty: lipy, cedru, cyprysu białego (skojarzenia z drewnianymi matrycami) trawy (asocjacje związane z papierem wytwarzanym z roślin) oraz świeży akord soli morskiej. Dziękujemy Uczestniczkom: Andżelice, Hripsime, Julii, Nikoli, Magdzie, Mai, Oliwii, Wiktorii, Weronice, Zuzannie za wspaniałe spotkanie, otwartość, ciekawość i niesamowitą kreatywność. Podziękowania kierujemy też do towarzyszących Uczestniczkom Pań Nauczycielek z Centrum dla Niewidomych i Słabowidzących w Krakowie: Janiny Skoczeń, Joanny Wrzesińskiej, Lucyny Zaleskiej. Intuicja mówi nam, że spotkamy się jeszcze nie raz. Tymczasem zapraszamy do obejrzenia fotoreportażu, którego autorem jest Zbigniew Michalski. Warsztat Mamy nosa do grafiki to projekt wspierany przez grant przyznany w ramach programu Krakowski Archipelag Kultury, pod nazwą Sztuka współpracy, realizowany przez Fundację A Sztuka? w partnerstwie z Galerią Sztuki Współczesnej Bunkier Sztuki w Krakowie. Pomysłodawczynią i organizatorką warsztatów jest Bronka Nowicka. Zaglądajcie na nasz profil, bo przygotowujemy warsztaty, na których Członkowie i Członkinie SMTG będą mogli nauczyć się zasad audiodeskrypcji dzieł sztuki. Jest laureatką Ważniejsze nagrody: Międzynarodowe Triennale Grafiki, Kraków 1994 – nagroda regulaminowa, Inter-Kontakt Praga 1995 – nagroda Stowarzyszenia im. Hollara, XVI International Graphic Art Biennial Dry Point/Sucha Igła, Užice (Serbia) 2023 – nagroda Silver Point.

Agnieszka Dobosz, a visual artist and printmaker, she graduated from the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and is now a professor at the University of Rzeszów's Faculty of Fine Arts. Her practice explores the intersection of abstraction and figuration through drawings, prints, and installations. A member of the Grupa 13 female art group, she has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. She has been recognized with awards such as a statutory prize at the International Print Triennial in Kraków (1994), the Hollara Association award at Inter-Kontakt Prague (1995), and the Silver Point award at the 16th International Graphic Art Biennial Dry Point in Užice, Serbia (2023).
